U.S. Navy veteran Donald Ray Bernard retired as a Submarine Service Commander in 1975. While serving his country for nearly 20 years, he also built a successful 36-year-long legal career.

After studying at the University of Michigan for two years, he transferred to The University of Texas at Austin, where he received multiple degrees. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1954, his Juris Doctor in 1958, and his Master of Laws in 1964. The same year he completed his J.D. degree, he earned admittance to the State Bar of Texas. He first worked as a Supreme Court of Texas Briefing Attorney and then as a Texas Assistant Attorney General before becoming a Partner with the Houston law firm Bernard & Bernard. After 20 years with that firm, he began his private practice, also in Houston. In 1995, he moved to Montana.

Although he still lives in Montana, where he volunteers as a certified mountain search pilot, Donald Ray Bernard also co-owns Golden Stag Safaris. Located in the Argentine Valley, Golden Stag Safaris is part of Nehuen Mapu Big Game Hunting Ranch. Trophy hunters from around the world track water buffalo, puma, and other large game on the resort. Golden Stag Safaris features a lodge and two cabins on diverse landscapes. In addition, Donald Ray Bernard maintains an association with a fly-fishing lodge that also provides rainbow trout for commercial sale.

In his leisure time, Donald Ray Bernard enjoys many outdoor activities, such as fly-fishing and big game hunting. He possesses a commercial pilot license.
